TROY, MI, March 1, 2018 – Troy, Michigan-based intellectual property law firm Young Basile Hanlon & MacFarlane, P.C. announced today that it hired former Dow Chemical counsel Norman Sims as a shareholder and Cole Goike as an associate.

Mr. Sims has over thirty-five years experience as a patent attorney. He advises clients on how to utilize intellectual property to improve profits. His work includes preparing and prosecuting chemical patent applications, preparing opinions on patent validity and freedom to practice, preparing and interpreting intellectual property agreements, developing and implementing business based intellectual property strategies, handling the intellectual property aspects of forming and taking apart business ventures, training business and technical clients and patent attorneys on intellectual property matters and handling the intellectual property aspects of the sale and acquisition of businesses.
From 1981 to February 2009, Mr. Sims was a member of the Intellectual Property Group of The Dow Chemical Company where he provided counseling on intellectual property to a variety of Dow businesses, concentrating on business use of intellectual property to enhance the profits of the businesses. During his tenure at Dow, he served as the patent counsel for business units and joint ventures of Dow and served as an intellectual capital manager for Dow businesses.
Mr. Sims received his Juris Doctor from University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, magna cum laude, in 1991. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and Pre-Law Liberal Arts, magna cum laude, from Albion College in 1978. He is licensed to practice in Michigan and in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Mr. Goike handles patent matters over a range of technologies in the mechanical and electromechanical arts. His experience includes preparing and prosecuting domestic patent applications, preparing patentability searches and opinions and providing litigation support including claim construction analysis. Prior to practicing law, Mr. Goike worked for engineering firms that design, construct and maintain roads, bridges, sidewalks, sewer systems and other infrastructure projects. He also worked for a utility company performing mapping services.
Mr. Goike received his Juris Doctor from Michigan State University College of Law in 2017. He received his Bachelor of Civil Engineering from University of Detroit Mercy in 2014. He is licensed to practice in Michigan and in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
