Justin T. Darrow, Ph.D., is Senior Counsel at Young Basile and a registered patent attorney with extensive experience in patent prosecution, counseling, and litigation support. His practice covers patent preparation and prosecution, including ex parte appeals, reissue applications, and reexamination, as well as client counseling, freedom-to-operate and invalidity opinions, invention mining, portfolio management, joint research and teaming agreements, and litigation support.

Dr. Darrow works across cybersecurity and cryptography, artificial intelligence and machine learning, optical and wireless communications, image processing, and nonlinear and quantum optics.

Before entering patent law, Dr. Darrow spent more than a decade in laser systems research, including high-speed device characterization, terahertz radiation, radar, optical communications, relativistic interactions of picosecond terawatt laser pulses with electron beams and plasmas, defensive mid-infrared countermeasures, turbidity-reducing marine imaging, medicine, and 3D printing.

Dr. Darrow later served as a patent attorney at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, deciding ex parte appeals of patent applications across all electrical technologies, and as a primary patent examiner in computer security and cryptography at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where he served career details at the Office of the Solicitor, the Central Reexamination Unit, and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

His research background allows him to build rapport with engineering teams, mine inventions from their work, and identify the most valuable and cutting-edge aspects of a client’s technology.
