On behalf of the entire team at Young Basile, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and deepest gratitude to Kathleen G. Mellon, Senior Counsel, who recently retired after a remarkable four-decade career in intellectual property law.
Kathleen concentrated her practice on trademark and copyright law, where she built an extraordinary record of service to clients across a wide range of industries. Over the course of her career, she handled more than 1,000 trademark and copyright registrations in the United States and around the world, guiding manufacturers, small business owners, software publishers, online service providers, entertainers, and entrepreneurs through every stage of obtaining and maintaining protection for their brands.
Kathleen’s litigation and contested-matter experience was equally impressive. She handled hundreds of contested proceedings, including dozens of matters before the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Clients relied on her seasoned judgment to enforce their trademark rights, navigate potential conflicts, and structure licensing agreements and other transactions with confidence.
Before joining Young Basile, Kathleen served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Oakland County, Michigan – an experience that sharpened the analytical rigor and advocacy skills she brought to every client engagement throughout her career. She earned her J.D. cum laude from the University of Detroit School of Law and held an AV Preeminent peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell, a distinction reserved for attorneys recognized for the highest levels of professional excellence.
Beyond her client work, Kathleen was a dedicated member of the intellectual property community, actively contributing to the Intellectual Property Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, the Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, among other organizations.
Above all, Kathleen was a valued colleague whose enthusiasm, energy, and generosity of spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside her. She is greatly missed by her clients and her colleagues alike. We thank Kathleen for her many years of outstanding service to Young Basile and wish her all the very best in her well-earned retirement.
