Dr. Hickam is a technical specialist providing support for the quantum technologies team. A chemistry major and mathematics minor as an undergraduate at Occidental College, he later researched experimental quantum optical spectroscopy as a PhD student majoring in physical chemistry at Caltech. As a physical chemist, Dr. Hickam designed, constructed, and characterized spectroscopic instruments based on broadband entangled photons. His research work included interdisciplinary collaborations in multiphoton medical imaging and integrated nonlinear photonics for quantum communication.

Industry Experience

Dr. Hickam’s industry experience lies at the interface of research and technological applications. He has provided strategic advice and technological expertise to startups and companies spanning technological areas from optical methane sensing to integrated photonics to power distribution. He has also worked with university technology transfer offices to facilitate the deployment of cutting-edge research into real-world settings. These experiences include an Analyst position at the Business Development Office at The Scripps Research Institute and Calibr, where Dr. Hickam provided strategic guidance towards the clinical development of early-stage pharmaceutical assets.
