Dr. Nilsen has nearly twenty-five years’ experience in intellectual property. He has industrial and patent experience in the chemical, engineering and material science fields. He is well-versed in all aspects of United States and global patent drafting and prosecution as well as freedom to practice matters, including a substantial EPO opposition practice. Dr. Nilsen is also proficient in intellectual property transactional agreements. He has worked on global intellectual property strategies for multi-billion-dollar businesses.

Industry Experience

From 1995 to 2019, Dr. Nilsen was a member of The Dow Chemical Company Legal Department where he provided counseling on intellectual property to a variety of Dow businesses, including Dow’s corporate functions, reporting directly to the Chief Patent Counsel, large core business, start-up businesses and ongoing market facing businesses. During his time at Dow, he worked on transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, licensing, joint development, joint venture, contract manufacturing, consulting, technical services, creative services, research services, consortium and settlement agreements. He also worked on creating, implementing, supporting and executing IP strategies for technologies including small organic molecule synthesis, chemical-material processes and apparatus, thermoplastic and thermoset polymers, polymer composites, ceramic-metal composites, ceramics, crystalline polymeric fibers, particulate filtration, cutting tools, 3D printing, gas separation, amines, mechanical devices, particulate filtration, catalysis, adhesives, ceramic synthesis and concrete.

Team recognition for contributions to the concrete industry in 2002.
