Mr. Young is one of the country’s most experienced IP trial attorneys, having handled dozens of jury trials and over 100 contested matters.

He has more than 50 years’ experience in private practice in all aspects of intellectual property law.  He has authored more than 2,500 patents and has successfully represented clients in state and federal courts – including numerous trials – in Michigan, Illinois, Massachusetts, Virginia, Florida, California, Kansas, Texas, South Carolina, New York, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, as well as appellate courts such as the Court of Appeals 6th Circuit, 9th Circuit, 11th Circuit and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. His notable cases include Honeywell v. ITT Industries, 452 F.3d 1312 (Fed. Cir. 2006), where successfully represented ITT.

Mr. Young also represents clients in IPR proceedings.  His work includes successfully representing the patent owner in J Squared , Inc. v. Sauder Manufacturing Company, IPR2015-00958, IPR2015-00774, and IPR2016-00413.

Industry Experience

An electrical engineer by training, Mr. Young worked for General Motors Corporation in its Patent Section in both Detroit and Washington D.C. He has also recently prevailed in three IPR’s on behalf of a nationally known furniture company in Ohio.

Mr. Young has represented hundreds of clients, including numerous automotive suppliers and a manufacturer of semiconductor equipment.

Professional Activities

Mr. Young is a member of the Intellectual Property Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan and has served as its Chairman (1977).  Mr. Young has also participated as a Member of the Council for Judicial Reform, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, (1993-1994) and is active in the State Bar of Michigan’s Intellectual Property Community Involvement Initiative.
